I used BigFish's method (thank you!) and it fixed it, but then kept reverting.

Alternative method I used BigFish's method (thank you!) and it fixed it, but then kept reverting. However, an AWOL cursor is indeed a little too eccentric for comfort. I'd say, when using Word, simply prepare to accept that you get eccentric functionality (to put it politely).
